FORRES BENAUD SELECTED TO PARTICIPATE IN ANGUS YOUNG SIRE PROGRAM
This week, the Angus Society of Australia has requested that we enter Forres Benaud B1 in their Young Sire Program (YSP). As you know, he will be offered for sale as Lot 1 in our Annual Bull Sale to be held on 27th July 2007.
The bull has been independently assessed by Bob Dent from Angus Australia who commented that his excellent structure, outcross pedigree, top class Breedplan performance and excellent temperament make him an ideal bull for the program.
Whether or not this invitation is accepted will depend entirely on the purchaser. If the purchaser wishes to enter the bull in the program, we will share all costs on a 50/50 basis.
To have this bull invited to join the YSP is a great honour and testament to our breeding program.
Over the years it has been our policy to name our outstanding bulls after famous
cricketers whose name begins with the letter of the appropriate year of the bull’s birth.
In 1992 we had a magnificent young sire, Forres Arthur Morris M13.
Naming Benaud B1
When it became obvious that the Mytty in Focus son B1 was quite exceptional, we decided to name him after Jon’s first First Grade Cricket captain, another cricket legend, Richie Benaud. As he was in France at the time, a message was left on his answering machine requesting permission to use his family’s name.
A mix up occurred and Richie thought we wanted to name a ball after him not a bull.
The matter was subsequently sorted out and we received the following email from him:
'Dear Jon,
I am sorry to have made what can only be described as a balls-up in regard to Forres Benaud B1 (AI). I was assuming it would be something to do with raising funds for the Primary Club through various first-ballers around the country, but I was considerably wide of the mark.
I was lucky enough to have Arthur Morris as one of my mentors when playing cricket in the late 1940s and 1950s and it is a pleasure to be bracketed with him in this venture as well.
Love from Daph and me to you and Chris - Rich"
Forres Annual Bull Sale 2007
Welcome to the 16th Annual Bull Sale of the Forres Angus Stud held at "Under Wycombe" on Friday, 27th July, 2007 commencing at 1pm
51 Registered Angus Bulls
As we started to put this catalogue together, the heavens opened and after over 250 mm of rain in 48 hours and resultant floods, we are no longer in drought. While damage at Wycombe Park and Melbee was limited to the loss of a number of fences, our winter pastures have been severely impacted and we now have very sodden paddocks. We are however very conscious of those less fortunate, those who have suffered devastating loss of life, property and stock, coupled with those of our fellows who are still waiting for drought breaking rain.
We are very excited about this year’s offering. Lot 1 is the first son of Mytty in Focus (a son of SAF Focus of ER) to be offered for sale in Australasia, and is said to be the best bull to ever come forward at Forres. He is a complete outcross for all Precision 1680 blood lines including Future Direction. Our other exciting new sires include Ironwood New Level and Bando 0699 whose sons in this sale are outstanding. Other major sires include Baldridge Nebraska, BSS Limited Design, Design Plus 97, Bon View New Design 878 and the very popular Australian sire, Ardrossan Connection X15.
In our sire selection, we are very conscious of the requirements of all our clients. To this end, we believe that this year’s offering contains a range of bulls that will suit all our buyers whatever their market range and we are confident that all the bulls are practical no fuss cattle. As usual we will be offering free delivery to all major centres in NSW.
For some time we have been anxious to get about more and see what is happening in other parts of the country. In February we traveled to Southern Victoria and attended the Vermont, Barwidgee and Banquet Angus Bull Sales. At Banquet we purchased Lot 14, Banquet Abode A005, a son of Bando 5175 out of Banquet Nanny V44. He is a big long, wide, thick butted, clean shouldered beast that carries a magnificent head and jaw. We just loved his phenotype and his pedigree added another dimension to our herd and we are confident that he will make a major contribution to the future development of the Forres Stud.
In March we were off to Tasmania, inspected the Rosedale Sale bulls and attended the Chale, Cluden Newry, Landfall and Woodbourn Angus Bull Sales. At Woodbourn we purchased a 50% interest in Woodbourn Hingaia A41 in partnership with John and Joan Woodruff of Witherswood Angus.
In May we attended the Beef Expo and the 87th NZ Angus National Show and Sale in Palmerston North where the judge was Jack Woodburn from Forbes. Prior to the sale we had visited Alan and Michelle Dalziell (Atahua), Richard and Vickie Rowe (Merchiston) and Lin and Val Johnstone (Ranui) and saw the bull Jack ultimately chose as champion, Atahua TJ 141-05, a very powerful, well balanced bull, who later topped the sale, selling for $NZ57,000. After the Show and Sale we also visited Will MacFarlane (Waiterenui).
Apart from broadening our knowledge and exposure, we are all the more confident that our breeding program is on course and is producing a style of Angus cattle that will satisfy the demands of our clients
We are particularly pleased to hear of the many successes our clients are having using Forres genetics and ask that you don’t be shy in telling us of your successes. Following Stephen Garland’s win in the Lightweight carcase section of last year’s Sydney Royal, we now extend congratulations to two more repeat clients, Martin Addison of East Gresford who topped the weaner sale in Singleton and Nigel Campbell of Perth, (Tasmania) who topped the Angus average at the weaner sale in Bothwell.
Where would we be without Brett, who manages everything so well (despite the demands of his young family, the Dungog Showground Trust and his great passion, Camp Drafting) and a extra special thank-you to Matt and Kris who are the engine room of the organization and held the fort so magnificently during our trips away. We thank all three of them for a job well done.
